A Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST) is a certified professional who educates parents and caregivers on how to use car seats properly. CPSTs help keep children safe by:
Providing personalized instruction on how to install and secure a child in a car seat
Helping caregivers understand how to transition their child to a different type of car seat
Informing caregivers about manufacturer recalls and passenger safety laws
Conducting community presentations and child safety seat checks
CPSTs are trained by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the National Child Passenger Safety Board, and Safe Kids Worldwide. Their training includes a 40-hour course that covers topics such as car seat installation options, harnessing procedures, and vehicle differences. The training also includes hands-on exercises.
To remain certified, CPSTs must: Take continuing education courses, Learn about new car seats, Train parents, and Have an instructor check their car seat installations every two years.
